Best Bites: May 28 through June 3

May 27, 2015

It will be hard to match the fantastic striper fishing taking place in San Pablo and San Francisco Bay, but there are quality options available this week. Kokanee fishing is falling into place at New Melones. Alpine County creeks are stuffed with trout, the upper Sacramento is in the best shape it’s going to be all summer and there are shad on the Sacramento River in Butte County and shad on the Yuba. All that and a lively bass bite in Frank’s Tract. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

NEW MELONES kokanee: The kokanee at New Melones are very clean, fat and healthy and keep getting bigger. The kokanee are starting to school in depths ranging from 35-55 feet. Many anglers have found luck trolling a variety of different baits. Glitterbugs Micro Hoochies, Uncle Larry's Spinners and Simon Baby Wobblers have been working well. The fish seem to be biting pink and orange baits. Also, try fishing a short leader between your dodger and lure. This will allow the dodger to move the bait side-to-side and will draw more strikes. Tip your lures with scented and dyed shoepeg corn. Garlic, anise and bloody tuna are a few favorites. Glory Hole Sports (530) 533-4990

SAN PABLO, SAN FRANCISCO BAY striped bass: Striped bass bite remains epic for bass weighing 4 to 6 pounds. Case in point: A pair of anglers this week took 24 live shiners to Red Rock and caught 21 bass averaging 6 to 7 pounds and 1 shaker. Largest striper weighed 14 pounds. Tough to top that. Loch Lomond Marina (415) 456-0321

PACIFICA striped bass: Striper fishing is best at Rockaway Beach. Mussel Rock also is worth a shot. Use hairraisers, ST Minnows, Super Strikes and even metal. A lot of stripers in the 12 pound class are being landed. Rusty Hook (650) 355-8303, New Coastside (650) 359-9790

CARSON RIVER trout: The East and West Carson and Markleeville Creek last week received 3,800 pounds of trout from the county and the state. Most remain, waiting for you to wet a line. A 6.8 pounder was caught by a fly fisher in Markleeville Creek. Creekside Lodge (530) 694-2511.

UPPER SACRAMENTO trout: Recent thundershowers had little impact and river is in excellent shape. There are good caddis hatches, golden stones and salmonflies coming off. There are great opportunities from Box Canyon to Sims. The Fly Shop (530) 222-3555

SACRAMENTO RIVER shad: Shad fishing continues to be quite good and stripers are in the area. Good shad spots are Butte City, Ord Bend and the boat landing at Scotty’s. There are r stripers at the same spots. A lot of shakers but plenty of 6-8 pounders. A 37-pounder was caught last week. Use jumbo minnows or cut baits. Pencil Poppers will work during low light. The Tackle Box (530) 898-9761; Fish First (530) 343-8300

YUBA RIVER shad: Shad bite is good, not great. Fly fishers are getting 20 to 30 fish days. Action is good all the way up to the dam. Fish First (530) 343-8300

FRANK'S TRACT bass: Black bass are chasing top water lures. A lot of bass in the 3 to 4 pound range are being hooked. Whopper Ploppers or any lure that can make a big splash will work. Stripers are in the area and top water lures, swim baits and live bluegill get the job done. Hook, Line & Sinker (925) 625-2441
