Pyramid Lake cutthroat

Best Bites: Oct. 1 through Oct. 7

September 30, 2015

Some cooler weather, some rain but not enough of either, helps anglers a bit. The big event is the opening of Pyramid Lake today to cutthroat trout fishing. Water is low, but launching is possible at Pelican Point. How the fishing will be is a mystery but there will be plenty of anglers giving it a go. Otherwise, the Eastern Sierra is a good destination with Convict Lake and neighboring Crowley Lake both producing quality trout. Caples Lake in the Western Sierra is fuller than most lakes and cool enough to produce very good trout results. Plus, there are steelhead on the Trinity and Upper Klamath. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

CAPLES LAKE trout: The water has cooled down to 60 degrees and the catching is picking up. Brandon Burrell from Elk Grove caught a 6 pound rainbow from the dam using a fly rod. (209) 258-8888

CONVICT LAKE trout: A 9 pound trout and a good showing of six pounders were caught this week. A variety of baits and lures worked this week. Nightcrawlers remained king by catching some of the largest fish of the week. Some of the most productive spots on the lake were the Inlet, the Outlet/Jetty area and the North Shore. The "Catch of the Week" was caught at the Inlet. (760) 934-3800

CROWLEY LAKE trout: Trolling and fly fishing both are productive. Trollers do well in McGee Bay and the north arm of the lake. Fish in 25 to 30 feet of water and get near the bottom with Thomas Bouyants, Needlefish. Fly fishers go to the same spot, but get trout in shallower water. Trout are hooked in 12 to 14 feet of water. Guide Mickey Baron (760) 937-3245; Crowley Lake Fish Camp (760) 935-4301

LEWISTON LAKE trout: Trout bite is excellent. Most get limits using Kastmasters, silver spoons and anything with glitter. Trolling or bait fishing both get action. Trout are in the top five feet. Fly action has kicked in at the flats and Frog Rock. Pine Cove Marina (530) 778-3878

PYRAMID LAKE cutthroat: Thursday is opening day and you can bet trout larger than 10 pounds will come in. Lake is low but launchable at Pelican Point. Water temp is 60 degrees at the shoreline. Crosby’s Lodge (775) 476-0400

TRINITY RIVER steelhead: Steelhead are everywhere. Boaters are pulling plugs or side drifting roe. Shore anglers drift roe, nightcrawlers, spoons and spinners. Anglers are finding there aren’t as many salmon as they were hoping. Most are concentrating below Junction City. Trinity Outdoors (530) 623-4999

UPPER KLAMATH steelhead: Salmon have arrived on the upper Klamath and so have steelhead. It’s starting to get good here. Guide Scott Caldwell (530) 905-0758
