Nor Cal Fish Reports

Toxic algae bloom put the kibosh on what was anticipated to be a very good Dungeness crab opener. Low flow closures on the North Coast continue to spoil anglers’ dreams there, too. What’s a fisherman to do? Eagle Lake is on fire. Contra Loma in Antioch produced two 10 pound bass last week and the Delta near Antioch is churning out stripers. San Luis Reservoir striper bite is taking hold and there is always rock cod biting. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

CONTRA LOMA bass: Two bass weighing 10 pounds were caught last week. Marco Herrera III caught a 10.15 pounder with a jig near the Swim Lagoon. Andrew Simmons caught-and-released a 10.12 pound drop-shotting from a float tube. Biggest fish of the week was a 13.7 pound catfish hooked by Matilde Quiroga. (510) 544-3154

EAGLE LAKE trout: Lake is fishing great. Water temps are 55 to 57 degrees. Trout are right on top. Fly fishers go between Wildcat Point and Christie Day Use. Trollers are able to fish anywhere. Trout are over deep water. Flourescent orange is the hot color. www.eaglelakefishing.net

SAN LUIS RESERVOIR striped bass: Coyote Bait & Tackle Striper Derby is on and will run through Feb. 1. Striper bite is good on both sides of the the reservoir. A 4WD is needed to launch at Dinosaur. Trash Racks has been productive. Forebay action is good for quality stripers. Some as large as 20 pounds have been caught. Aqueduct also is productive. Coyote Bait & Tackle (408) 463-0711

SACRAMENTO RIVER (Lower) trout: Fishing is good from Redding through Balls Ferry. Bigger fish are near Redding. Better numbers downstream. Small mayflies or eggs will draw action. The Fly Shop (530) 222-3555

ANTIOCH striped bass: Striper bite continues. Bass to 20 pounds are coming in from Pittsburg and Broad Slough. Live bait has been getting best results, whether it’s a goby, minnow or bluegill. Gotcha Bait & Tackle (925) 706-7400

COASTAL rock cod: Always a sure bet. Limits of rock cod and plenty of lings with a few bonito in the mix.
