Best Bites: June 25 through July 1

June 24, 2015
Nor Cal Fish Reports

Beat the heat and head toward the SF Bay and coast. There you will find cooler temps during the upcoming heat wave and hotter fishing. Limits of stripers are common in the bay and halibut are becoming more plentiful. There are stripers on the beaches, too. Party boats have been scoring early limits of salmon along the Marin Coast and rock cod boats are also bringing back heavy sacks. All that and the hex hatch continues at Almanor. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

LAKE ALMANOR trout, smallmouth: Hex Hatch continues. Smallmouth are attacking at the surface and are the most common catch. Trout are deeper. Surface temps are 71.5 degrees mid-day and climbing. Clarity is excellent. The Hex Hatch is in full gear... casings are found all around Almanor. Other hatches are slowing. Doug Neal: (530) 258-6732 http://www.almanorfishingadventures.com

CAPITOLA halibut: Halibut bite is picking up. A 33 pounder was caught last weekend and a handful of 20 pounders are coming from between the Mile Reef and the SC3 Buoy. Mackerel, anchovies and sardines are near shore. Stripers are along the beaches and off the pier. (831) 462-2208

PACIFICA striped bass: Osprey lures have been the hot lure for striper anglers but the standards will work. Bass are close to the surf from Ocean Beach to Montara. It’s mostly a morning bite. Stripers to 39 pounds have been caught. Rusty Hook (650) 355-8303, New Coastside (650) 359-9790

SAN FRANCISCO BAY striped bass: Party boats with 30 anglers are getting limits of striped bass and halibut are starting to be caught in greater numbers. An amazing season continues. Loch Lomond Marina (415) 456-0321

LOS VAQUEROS trout: Best trout bet in the Bay Area. Trout limits are common. Not a lot of whoppers coming in but bite is quite good. Most of the action is in South Cove and Cowboy Cove. Power Bait, nightcrawlers or Kastmasters work. (925) 371-2628

GOLDEN GATE salmon: Limits of salmon are being caught, sometimes by 10 a.m. Kings in the 20 pound class are coming in every day. Best action has been off the Marin County coast.
