There is still salmon action if you want to take the ride north to the Smith River or give a try on the Sacramento River at Knights Landing. Striper bite is quite good on the Napa River and back on the Sac at Knights Landing. Other than that, there are trout good trout prospects in the Bay Area. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

LOS VAQUEROS trout: Lake has received 9,000 pounds of trout in six weeks and limits are common in Howden Cove and Oak Point. Stripers have been small – 15 to 17 inches. Catfish bite continues to be pretty good. (925) 371-2628

MOUNT TAMALPAIS LAKES trout: Want an Alpine setting to catch trout without the long drive? Mount Tamalpais lakes Bon Tempe and Lagunitas were planted Tuesday. Bon Tempe received 1,000 pounds and Lagunitas got 500 pounds of trout averaging a half-pound. (415) 945-1194

NAPA RIVER striped bass: Striper bite is very good, even better than weeks past. Trolling, bank fishing all get action on decent sized fish. Some as large as 20 pounds but lots of 18 to 24 inchers. There is a lot of bait in the river, including a lot of smelt.

SMITH RIVER salmon: River is in good shape and should stay open through the weekend, plus there is more rain on the way. The river rose significantly this week and has opened the whole river. Salmon are in throughout and guide Mike Coopman describes action as wide open. Mike Coopman (707) 465-1367

KNIGHTS LANDING stripers, salmon: Big stripers are being checked in here. It’s late in the season but the bite seems to be peaking. Late run salmon, also big and bright, also are being caught regularly.
