Nor Cal Fish Reports

There are plenty of angling choices this weekend for adventurous anglers. Shoreline anglers get salmon at Benicia and Freeport; Cutthroat trout at Heenan Lake or Pyramid Lake; black bass at Berryessa; stripers in the Delta and the Napa River; and there is the always reliable coastal rock cod bite. Here are this week’s Best Bites:

LAKE BERRYESSA bass: Bass bite is the only thing going on here. Some are night fishing and getting larger fish and solid numbers. Spoon bite is excellent. Jigs, Senkos offered around structure works well. Good quality bass being landed. Sweeney’s Sports (707) 255-5544; Don Paganelli (916) 502-3474

CONVICT LAKE trout: A 9-pound plus rainbow was caught here last week. Bite is very good. Cast red/gold or frog pattern Thomas Buoyant. Other lures that were working included Rapalas, Kastmasters and Marvel Flies. If you are going to troll, use a Tasmanian Devil or a Needlefish. The top Powerbait color was Rainbow. Any garlic Powerbait continued to drive the fish crazy.

HEENAN LAKE cutthroat: Only a few weeks left in this season. Cutthroat are starting to come closer to the surface. Panther Martins (yellow body/silver blade) get fish. Most anglers employ float tubes or small boats with electric motor. Creekside Lodge (530) 694-2511

PYRAMID LAKE cutthroat: Biggest trout of opening week was a 20.4 pounder caught from a boat at Warrior. Pelican and Warrior were good spots. Trolling and jigging both accounted for fish and those in boats, pontoons or float tubes are doing far better than shore anglers. Some anglers caught and released up to 60 cutthroat. Pelican Point is the only launch point, but there were no problems. The surface water temperature is between 66 and 68 degrees and it is keeping most of the fish in 20 plus feet of water. Crosby’s Lodge (775) 476-0400. GUIDES: George Molino 775-476-0555 Cutthroat charters; Joe Mendes Eagle Eye Charters – 775-574-0900.

NAPA RIVER striped bass: Striper fishing is quite good. Some are getting 40 fish days. Live bait works well. Five to 15 pounders are taking mudsuckers or split tails. Trolling with P-Line Predators and deep-diving broken back Rebels do very well. Bass are in 15 to 18 feet of water. There are huge schools of fish from American Canyon into the City of Napa. Sweeney’s Sports (707) 255-5544

BENICIA salmon: Salmon action has been good. Anglers are averaging 20 salmon per day at the state park and another 10 per day are coming in at First Street. Biggest fish of the season is a 32 pounder landed Monday. Salmon are being caught with spinners. Striper action has been best in the State Park. A 15 pounder was caught Sunday. Grass shrimp, pile worms, blood worms, mudsuckers will get stripers. Anchovies and shad will work. Benicia Bait (707) 745-4921

FRANK'S TRACT striped bass: Striped bass bite is very good. Hundred fish days aren’t unheard of and there are 10 to 20 pound fish in the mix. Artificial lures in low light conditions work best. Live bait works during the day. Bluegill and redear are top baits. Bullhead if you can get them. Hook, Line & Sinker (925) 625-2441

COASTAL rock cod: It’s been nearly automatic limits of rock fish with plenty of ling cod from Crescent City to Morro Bay. All that, plus calm ocean conditions.
