Nor Cal Fish Reports

Summer crowds have thinned now that the school year has started. That leaves uncrowded docks and shorelines and the peace and quiet that sometimes comes with fishing. And some of the top spots worth exploring this weekend are just the type of places that can provide peace and quiet – McCloud Reservoir, Carson River, Lewiston Lake – among others. These and spots for salmon, stripers and more trout await in this week’s Best Bites:

TRINIDAD salmon: Salmon bite is on in Trinidad in front of Camel Rock and a mile out. Limits are common. Mooching gets the larger fish in the 20s. Most are in the teens. Matt Northwind Charters (707) 616-5803

McCLOUD RESERVOIR trout: Trout fishing is excellent. Slow trolling gets trout in ¾- to 2 pound range with a few to four pounds. Rainbows and browns are being caught. Thirty fish days are not uncommon, reports guide Scott Caldwell. Guide Scott Caldwell (530) 905-0758

PACIFICA striped bass: Striper bite has slowed a bit, but it’s still quite good. There are striped bass and perch being caught overnight. There’s action from Ocean Beach to Pacifica and then down toward Half Moon Bay. Rusty Hook (650) 355-8303, New Coastside (650) 359-9790

ANTIOCH striped bass: Stripers continue to be caught from the pier. There also has been good action for boaters at Hastings Island for larger stripers from 23 inches to 30 pounds. Mudsuckers, fresh shad work best. Gotcha Bait & Tackle (925) 706-7400

LOWER SACRAMENTO trout: The fishing has been great. Best bite happens late morning through the afternoon. Big fat rainbows are the norm on this river today. Expect 16" rainbows. Fish going over 20" are common. We expect the fishing to be great through the rest of the month and well into September. Most fish are eating nymphs like #14 Cinnamon Poopahs, #18 Brown or Olive Pheasant Tails, Peaches & Cream.. Rubber Legs in #4-6 are always a top producer. The Fly Shop (530) 222-3555

EAST CARSON RIVER trout: East Carson last week was planted with 1,800 pounds of rainbow trout in six different locations over a 5-1/2 mile stretch. Another load will go in prior to Labor Day weekend. Hard to miss here. Creekside Lodge (530) 694-2511

LEWISTON LAKE trout: The big flush gave this lake a boost. There is a current through the lake due to water releases from Trinity. Visibility is very good. Trout bite has been excellent. Bait fishing has been good north of Pine Cove Marina. Pine Cove Marina (530) 778-3878
